    I have a hardware ssl clone, and everytime I do these A/B comparisons the plugins seem to do the ssl thing very well, but the hardware grabs everything better, smooth everything out better, and adds nice harmonics, it's just not the same.

    First time I have been able to hear difference... I think 🤔 The hardware seemed full without the 'edgy' sound apparent in the plugin... mostly in the bass and snare.

    I'd like to hear the V30 on one side and the Gt2 on the other, at the same time, with the full mix. Sometimes the thicker version and the brighter version sound huge together. My main cab is a V30 4x12 and probably always will be. But in this example, I kind of prefer the G12. I agree it's got more sizzle and I can see that leaning into annoying territory, but it's not so much that it bothers me. Honestly I'm confident either one could sound great with a little EQ, but it's still a good comparison. I never recorded much, but I do know that for playing live, once you find a cabinet you really like, hang on to that rsscal. :)

    • @diyrecordingstudio
      @diyrecordingstudio 4 дня назад

      I can say I tried that specifically, but tried them blended with each other and they didnt work well. The g12's dont sound super horrible in this mix, but once you get to final mix and mastering where everything gets brighter and louder, they do definitely start to get annoying. Guitars, especially rhythm stuff needs to be rolled off in the high frequencies way more than most people think. the g-12's generally just mean i have to work harder to make the mix right. Fair call though!

    I like all of the sounds. I think a blend of both cabinets would be awesome. When you eq’d your setup it sounded like how I thought a blend would sound. How did you handle the low-end of the V-30 in the mix? I thought it was going to be muddy, but it wasn’t.

    • @diyrecordingstudio
      @diyrecordingstudio 4 дня назад

      Thanks Kyle, great question. I have 3 mics, and sm57, a ribbon mic, the rm5 and an Md421 micing up the v30. Each mic goes to a specific pre and eq where I gently roll off highs and lows and eq a bit on the way in during recording. Then I just use fabfilter proq 3 to do the rest. It’s all about rolling off those lows somewhere otherwise it would get muddy in the mix. However I find it doesn’t sound to bad without any of that. My room being acoustically treated helps too!

    • @user-mi4du9rd1j
      @user-mi4du9rd1j 4 дня назад

      That's my thought too, try both at once. Sometimes the thicker version and the brighter version sound huge together. Might just need a little EQ to peel back any peaks that offend your ears.

  • @randallhall9348
    @randallhall9348 4 дня назад

    The V30 sounds more musical - you can hear guitar notes through the distortion. G75 sounds harsh, dry, gravel-like and muddy in the mix.

      I very much agree!

    • @user-mi4du9rd1j
      @user-mi4du9rd1j 4 дня назад

      The G12-75 in this is a good example of frequency response making a guitar seem a lot more distorted than it really is. Those extra highs "feel" like more gain, with that fizz on top.

      Yeah that’s fair. Some people still love those speakers. I find them too harsh. They do cut through, but I find I can make the v30s cut through the same way without tearing my ears off

    I disagree with some of your opinions on modeling microphones. Let's start with the obvious statement of 'you only need that amount of microphones'. It's totally subjective as to which ones you actually need, which is why big recording studios have a variety to choose from. And no, I'm not better off buying a selection of Neumann's simply because I can't afford them. 2. You don't need a bunch of software to use these. As a matter of fact you don't need any. These are decent mics to begin with and work just fine without the modeling part. I don't think these modeling mics are in a price range that would keep anyone from buying a real one eventually once people know what they do and don't like. 3. If you DO choose to use the modeling feature, you need ONE plug-in, which is the Hemisphere Plug-In and it works in all the DAWs. Sounded a bit more dramatic than it was when you explained it in my opinion.

    Nice video! Sorry for the beginner question but why do you have your pre amps and eqs in pairs? Isn't 1 enough?

    • @diyrecordingstudio
      @diyrecordingstudio 4 дня назад

      great question. It totally depends on what you are doing. Say I'm doing drums, well I'm going to need pairs for Overhead mics and room mics. Or say I'm mixing back through my outbaord comps, eq's and compressors, drums, guitars and the different busses AND overall mix buss are all stereo, so they need pairs for analog processing. I hope this makes sense!

      Yeah thanks for the update, I am aware they changed this. Regarding the strip and how it works. I'm familiar with the real real hardware and understand how it works. I build clones of this exact hardware too. I just think the design is silly when its digital. There is no need to display tiny switches just because the hardware looks that way. From a design point it makes no sense to copy the flaw from the real thing over into digital when you can just make the visuals easier to use. A hot take, maybe. not everyone agrees, but it's an opinion i still stand by.

    Hey Mitch, I’m looking to get started with some outboard gear so was looking at the DIYRE CP5 with the colour modules. Do you have any thoughts on that and do you think I would be better off just going for a straight up 1073 clone kit instead? Im doing mostly rock and pop, will be using it mostly for vocal tracking. Cheers 🤘

    • @diyrecordingstudio
      @diyrecordingstudio 6 дней назад

      Hey Jesse! Excellent question. The cp5 is a great clean preamp and the colour modules are awesome. However if you’re doing vocals, rock and pop, I think a better first purchase is a 1073 style preamp. Everyone needs at least one. My suggestion is build a strong signal chain. Your mic and preamp are the most important. Then when you’re ready and the budget is there look at an 1176 style comp and then an opto style comp. These will change the quality of your vocal tracking immensely.

    I've actually heard the KM 84 has more mid-forward than the KM 184 not more low-end. In fact, I have two KM 184s and I can't imagine more low end (so much that you better move that mic out from a boomy source). I'm very interested in the Mic Parts SDC 84, thanks for the tips. I haven't built any DIYRE kits but I own the EQP 5 which really does a decent job, close to the Audioscape EQP-1A.

    Swap the yellow MKS caps for the Kemet MKP caps. Ceramic ones are also not ideal but you can't swap them for MKP because MKPs dont go lower than 1nf. Polystyrenes do but are a bit harder to find. If you want more info you can find Cyril Batemans book about capacitors in audio. Also you can record the before and after since you already have MKS caps inside there :)

      If you go the DIY route, you can build a chain for about $1500 which will set you up forever. Not cheap, but Not a lot of money in the scheme of things. If you buy the original ie, NEVE1073 etc it gets very expensive. Depends on your budget and what you're using stuff for. Just for perspective, I do this as a business so if i look at my gear as tools, the hardware may cost $1000-$1500 but in any other industry, this might be similar to the cost of tools r equipment. if not cheaper. If you factor in software subscriptions and updates of many years, they might actually wind up costing you the same if not more. It's a long game thing. Also the time it save recording with hardware and having to do less in mixing is invaluable. Just my thoughts though, everyone has to do what they can and what they can afford, I totally get it! Thanks for leaving a comment!

    Hey man this is a super useful video! I got a question that is sort of specific to my room shape/size if you don't mind - I just got my first pair of monitors with a set of Adam Audio T5Vs and am excited to setup my home studio space, but I'm not really sure what wall would be best to setup my desk on. My room is shaped kind of like an angular P with the leg portion of the P being a short little nook. If you were to cut out the nook, my room would be a rectangle, but the nook makes for an awkward extra bit of space that I've placed a keyboard in. I guess it would sort of look like this: A _________________________________________________ | | | | D | | ------------ |. B | | | | |_________________________________________. | C Sorry for the crude drawing, but hopefully it came out alright lol. Anyway, without the nook, this room is about 9.25x12 feet, then the nook adds about 3.25x4 feet of extra space (sorry for the dumb American imperial system too btw haha). I currently have my desk positioned on wall A in the center, more or less. Wall C is only about 5 feet behind me when I'm sat in my chair at my desk and I'm not sure if my desk would be better in the center of wall A, like how I currently have it, or if it should be in the center of wall B so that there is more space for the monitors to project before the sound reflects off wall D. Would the nook imbalance things so much that the shorter distance between walls A and B would be better, or would the added distance of being setup on wall B still be better, despite wall D being on even due to the nook? Sorry again for the strange and elaborate question. I'm just a newbie lol. Cheers!

    Its a mafia. micparts mics are 1k average prices. I mean great way to manipulate/inflate. Create scarcity inflate original products to 30k romancing old shtty recordings back in the day/celebrity etc then make copies for 1k twice the price of the genuine original back in the day. Question is are they as good as the 1k genuine branded mics ie tlm103 out their. omg. considering its really a hobby for ppl this blows my mind. Its just a pump fake the entire industry playing with ppl with now "vintage" is the new age. Its a circle jerk. A steady constant no end of marketing gimmicks and no new development. The special sauce cant be replicated?? The idea theirs some great tech in the older mics is trash. The recordings in the late 90's has yet to be overtaken. 2023 and a person cant replicate those sounds/tech using digital anything he throws thousands into. wtf. Its fools gold. The music industry will never allow the average studio to get their hands on that gear. No amount of time, money, talent, effort can make a good recording these days from what im hearing in ppls recordingz and that gear should not only be here but be cheap in an honest world. They are just throwing in tech, updates, editions, series etc to bite ppls time. Its a fking joke. Full of broken dreams and gas lighting. Now they have ppl going back in time?? haha.

    I'm going to disagree on Behringer's new products and price point being a good thing. The price point is just low enough to entice truckloads of inexperienced people into spending money they shouldn't spend on gear they don't need. Most people have no idea why a Neve 1073 is useful. People who are buying the clones are legit going online and looking for settings other people use to get "the sound," without having any idea of microphone topology, proximity, volume of the instrument, the rooms other people are recording in, and the process after the preamp that dictates what the preamp is set to. We're soon going to see these products flood the used market, being sold by people who were sold a dream without being grounded in reality. Look at the comments from the Behringer 369 videos where they're compared to the real Neve piece. Most of the commenters are saying the Behringer sounds better, because it's letting more high end through and it's more "articulate." Some of the RUclipsrs are saying the same things. Almost all inexperienced people are drawn to cheaper gear that has too much high end detail that is ultimately useless in most commercial applications. These people need ear training and a good course on music production, not another piece of cheap gear. Gear is a roadblock that most people can't see. This is coming from a guy who owns commercial recording studios filled with gear, but it's all part of a money making company that can justify the need, cost, and upkeep. Most home studios aren't tracking with 30-40 open mics on 30-40 independent tracks at a time. Home studios have the luxury of time. They can spend days recording parts and days sculpting the sounds in the box. Commercial studios need immediate soundscapes. If we had the luxury of time we wouldn't need the gear.

    I'm waiting for the 600 series units. With the 24+/24-/48+ power rails it should allow for much more headroom. Dedicated side-chain is also a plus!

    Great review. Are the JFET preamps (1 & 2) also compatible with condenser mics using the 48v phantom power?

    • @diyrecordingstudio
      @diyrecordingstudio 17 дней назад

      So the jfets are the instrument inputs for these type of devices and not part of the mic preamp circuit. Mic pre 1 & 2 will have phantom power though.

    Can’t say I’ve seen high end manufacturers drop prices due to Behringer’s clones. Feeling like they know the folks who buy Behringer stuff for the price won’t take the leap to high end gear anyway.

    • @diyrecordingstudio
      @diyrecordingstudio 17 дней назад

      Yeah that’s a very good point. Depends on how good they can make these clones sound. There’s always gonna be the premium end of the market though, you’re right.

      These things are sometime past their patents expiry. I think It’s all good to have a patent on something so the engineer or company can make their money back from r and d but after a while they need to become public domain so people can take those ideas and expand on them too.

    • @RealHomeRecording

      @@LostWithinOfficial because if a new company creates something very cool (like say, a "hover board") and they choose not to patent, trademark and/or copyright it, then some vulture capitalist a holes will swoop in and steal their ideas. Or, well established companies who built a reputation for quality goods could have their products copied and good name sullied.

      @@diyrecordingstudio no doubt by now the AMS Neve corporation have made their money back. Imagine if the 1073 and other devices hadn't been patented/trademarked though? I'm speaking specifically about modern day inventors/innovators and what they have to deal with. See my comment reply above.

    People love paying a premium just for the logo and name brand. You think it costs thousands to build, of course not .

    • @RealHomeRecording
      @RealHomeRecording 17 дней назад

      You're paying for warranty, craftsmanship and name brand. Similar to Air Jordans and Lexus. Also depending on how something is built it may be easier to repair than surface mounted technology.

    • @diyrecordingstudio
      @diyrecordingstudio 17 дней назад

      Yeah I agree with both comments here, sometimes you are paying for a badge. API vs CAPI is a good example of this. Other time they are cheating out somewhere and that might be vital to the sound of the device. It’s tricky.

      I see this comment all the time. I own all this stuff from the cheapest to the most expensive. I don't know of any cheap clone in the analog recording world that's the same as the original expensive counterpart. There are cheaper clones that sound fantastic, but they're still different.

    I really don't care if the 1273 has the Neve sound or not. It simply looks like something that's useful and sounds pretty good based on the video. There are only two types of gear for me. One that works and sounds good or it doesn't. Yes I have high end stuff, but I really don't care what the branding is. I always go for sound.
